EXHIBITIONS AND ART EVENTS 2018
Toronto exhibition "Art for Life"
"ART IS THE LIGHT THAT ILLUMINATES THE PATH OF FUTURE!" NEDA LAKETIĆ ŠOĆ - ACADEMIC SCULPTOR AND PAINTER Changes in nature largely depend on human engagement or, on the contrary, indifference. One small city of El Vallde de Anton, in the central part of Panama, located in the middle of a volcanic crater formed about a million years ago, has a yellow-gold frog mascot. Figurines of golden frogs, emblems, flags, pixels, lamps, scarves, are all in the form of this endemic species, which for an unknown reason is extinct. The Golden Frog has become an image used to bring happiness, even in the lottery. Artists have that luck with their exhibited art, to get attention, awaken emotions, or shake visitors with their own suspicion of the expediency as lifelong visitors on planet Earth. The exhibition of paintings "Art for Life", by Neda Laketić Šoć, an academic sculptor and painter is dedicated to the Sea Turtles. The exhibited works were at the SNA Gallery in Toronto, from September 29 to October 12, 2018. Neda's paintings and sculptures express the basic connection between the artist and nature, which is above all aesthetic, furthermore understanding and emulating expression with a close look on reality through the dominance of sensitivity. In the display of inconceivable reality, Neda's enhanced expressiveness is reflected in the power of color. In a conversation with Neda, I find out about the interesting creatures that she paints, which inspires her, and in whose name she fights for human attention and protection. Neda, are you an engaged fighter or a witness-writer in art? What are your essential requirements for art and artist? "Both! Either one, as an artist who creates works of art; this is the most natural way to express my thoughts, feelings, experiences and the understanding of the world around me. My art is the mirror of my thoughts, that is my intimate dialogue and the diary I lead about the world I live in, breathe, and celebrate life, with the ability to think and to be aware. For me, everything that happens in life is an inspiration! Every day, hour, minute brings a different new experience. If it touches me emotionally, I transfer it to my art." How did turtles get into art, or how did the science of protecting life on Earth come into your artistic expression? Does everything start with family and education? "I was born in Sarajevo, and grew up, in the family professionally oriented to science and medicine; even though my father was a doctor and my mother was a chemist, they had wonderful friends who were artists. For me, growing up in those society has been always fun, especially this disheveled feeling of freedom, which is a gift to every child. My talent was discovered very early by painter M. Brdaric and after finishing high school for the Fine Art I enrolled in Fine Art Academy to study sculpture. Those years of studying for me were very exciting, especially as I had the opportunity; as the majority of young people at that time, to travel to European cities and visit museums to experience first-hand sculptures, paintings, and the buildings I was studying about. My first exhibitions, I had as a student. Upon graduation, I became a member of the Fine Art Society of Yugoslavia, had several exhibitions, awards, study trips to France, and the status of a professional independent artist. After marriage, the birth of my children and the beginning of the war in Yugoslavia, my creative work had been stopped for almost a decade". Many animals are in danger because their habitats are changed by human intervention. Why turtles caused your artistic attention, and not some other animals, from the "red list" of endangered animal species: Javan Rhinoceros, Mountain Gorillas, and Sumatran Elephants? "My artistic inspiration in the cycle of paintings at this exhibition is Sea turtles; only seven species live on the whole planet. Males spend their entire life in the ocean, in contrast, females when they reach full maturity between 22 and 25 years come out to the certain sandy beaches (which are a limited number in the world) in the nights during the nesting season to dig a hole in the sand and lay eggs. The incubation lasts up to 80 days, and after hatching the young turtles emerge from a sand in a frantic rush to the ocean. It happens usually on the same beach where the female turtle was born itself. Some Sea turtles, such as the Dermochelys coriacea or Leatherback turtle, can be heavy up to 800 kg, and up two meters long. Some species come at the same time in large number, so it is called "Arribada" (arrival). I have a drawing under that name. One of these arrivals on the beach in Costa Rica (Playa del Ostional) was filmed and explained by an English physicist Brian Cox in one of the series "Wonders of the Universe". Even more, is interesting the fact that Sea turtles are present on this planet since the dinosaurs period about 150 million years, and their life cycle hasn't changed. Sea turtles are harmless to humans. They live in the seas, oceans, particularly among coral reefs, but not in the cold Polar Regions. They feed on jellyfish, shrimps, shellfish, fish and some sea herbs. All seven species of sea turtles are on the list of endangered species; actually, some of them are in danger to disappear". The composition of the exhibition can be divided into several parts: the life of the oldest inhabitants on the Earth, the beauty of vibrant colors and intricate codes of armor, the emotions that can be read, and the danger that these beautiful creatures disappear. What pictures would you extract? "My intention is to point out that the Sea turtles are completely harmless and have no weapons to defend themselves, they can only be protected with armor, swimming skills, concealment and us. Their biggest enemies are people. At the same time, they look beautiful to me, their colors are magical, and each turtle is different and has specificities as well as a unique expression. Turtles are conscious in my paintings and they have a facial expression that speaks. In the drawings "A Look" and "Together With the Living Art of Coral Reefs," facial expression of anger and worry is also my artistic concern. With paintings, collages, and drawings I want to present turtles in their full shine, in the living colors that are unique for each turtle, in their grandeur of the old-timers as an eternal traveler through the oceans, seas, and the time. Turtles in the role of rare witnesses of everything that has been happening through the millennia, which has not disrupt their existence to this day. I am afraid that we could be those ones who will let the turtles disappear. With this exhibition, I am trying to point out the negative consequences of pollution, specifically plastic pollution. This show is an appeal! It depends on us! I think that art has one of the leading roles in changing social consciousness. For me, art is the light that illuminates the way of the future! " At the opening of the exhibition, you give away your "Eco money", banknotes intended for the purchase of ecosystems? A sculpture called "Plastic turtle", turtles wrapped in a nylon has a message and a warning? "The basic threatening factor for the Sea turtles is the confusion about the food they eat. Plastic bags, see-through boxes, wrappers, and similar plastic objects, in the water look like a gourmet, slimy animal, and the sea turtles feed with them by mistake. However, plastic cannot be broken down in the stomach; it cumulates until turtle becomes sick or die from hunger. Avoiding the use of plastic bags and similar packaging will be a great help, for most of this waste ends up in the rivers, seas, and oceans. This is the message that the sculpture "Plastic Turtle" carries. Of course, the same happens to other living beings either they live in the water or on land, including people. People do not eat plastics, of course, but through the water and food which we consume, plastic is present into our body, so it has been established that a large percentage of people and animals on the planet have micro-particles in their blood and the number is growing. After the disappearance of previous civilizations; Egyptian civilization left us pyramids, temples, picturesque Egyptian script, the Sumerians left clay tablets with Cuneiform letters, Ancient Greece has left Olympics, sculptures, philosophy, mathematics, it seems to me behind us will remain an enormous amount of plastic, metal, concrete, and radiation, if we don't adjust our way of living in accordance with nature. Besides inspiration, for artists is important insular, and undisturbed work, and yet the art residences shift individualism somehow towards common themes and interaction of experiences. This year you participated in several painting residences, so how important is it for you? "As a member of the ULUS (Fine Art Association of Serbia), I receive information about exhibitions, competitions, and events on the art scene in Serbia. Hence, this spring I applied to the Art Residence Vranje 2018, organized by two artist Jasmina and Nikola Stojanovic - Atelier K33. Total of six artists was chosen: Jovana Stojanac,(Sabac), Milica Bjelanac, ( Zrenjanin), Neda Laketić Šoć (Canada), Katarina Novakovic (Leskovac), Dunja Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica), and Dragan Kupresanin. They provide us with all-inclusive accommodation, studio space, and material for work. The basic idea of the residence was an affirmation of our environment, rich history, and cultural and historical heritage. Each artist had the opportunity to choose motif and techniques to create new art as they wish, additionally, we had an opportunity to talk about a topic that inspired us the most, and to present short retrospect of individual art. I was talking about turtles and environmental pollution with plastic waste, which was very well accepted. After the completion of the residency program, the works were exhibited at the Gallery of the National Museum of Vranje. Soon after on a recommendation initiated by painter Đura Lubarda, I was invited to be a guest at two more art residences. The first one was DRINA 2018 (August 6 - 13), organized by sculptor and painter Mihajlo Gligorijevic - Glisa, where I met painters: Zoran Suvajac - Zograf, Dragoslav Višekruna, Zdravko Mićanović, Dragan Kunić, Dragana Ris, Srećko Zdravković, Jelena Milojevic, and Jasna Nikolic. We were housed in the mansion belongs to the Monastery of Chokeshina and consisting of the small church three glamour's buildings filled with hanging flowers over the terraces and blooming flower pots by the windows, not to mention in front of buildings was situated beautiful well-maintained, really impressive park. On one hot day in August, we went for a swim in the Drina River, which is extremely strong, and magically beautiful. I heard the stories that the river swallowed many swimmers and it has own means, defiant, and with own will. "The second residency was an International Art Convention BJELJINA 2018, Republic of Srpska (Aug. 26 - Sept. 1). This was an amazing opportunity for me to meet with artists from Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, and other countries; as a result, I was able to see their art and their interest in the visual arts. I become good friend among others, with the Russian painter Sofya Yechina, painter Miloš Dekić that lives in Slovenia, art photographer Bozidar Vitas from Belgrade. Last day of residency was crowned with the exhibition consisted of newly created artworks in the art gallery of the Cultural Center, Bjeljina. My stay on all three residences left on me lasting memories of the wonderful people, art creations and unforgettable fun gatherings." Neda, what can we expect to follow after this works? "The changes inevitably happen when you create. You are looking for the best way how to achieve expressively what you want, so my art went through various stages from realism, stylization, and abstraction to reach the turtles ... ha, ha! You are asking me what I will do next. The answer is simple; I will create art which will support the harmony of nature by highlighting the rights for all beings to live in accordance with nature. I already made a sculpture of Novak Djokovic, so I'm going to make a sculpture of Nikola Tesla.
